Accomplish something first thing in the day and it’s going to be great.

Here’s my morning routine. I’ve been doing this since I can remember. Having something you know you’re going to do first thing in the morning sets the tone for the rest of the day. I don’t like feeling rushed first thing in the morning - I like feeling clear-minded and ready to take on whatever the day throws at me. This isn’t the be all end all…I encourage you to find what works best for you.

Bathroom - duh

Roll bottom of feet - I began doing this when I was in the Army. I read an article that talked about all of the nerve endings in the bottom of your feet, and how you can wake yourself up in the morning by rolling the bottom of your feet. It also helps reduce soreness in your calves and provides a quick jolt of energy.

Meditate for 10 minutes - this does not have to be perfect nor anything structured when first starting out. Reading the book “Buddha Walks into a Bar” broke down the barriers of mediation for me. Sit somewhere quiet in a comfortable position (I sit on a blue pad on a yoga mat and lean back against a wall,) and solely focus on your breathe. Any random thought or anxiety that creeps in should be swiped away, and then go back to listening to your breathe. There is no perfection in meditation - literally just doing it will make your day better, guaranteed! (probably more on meditation later)

Yoga flow - and I use the term “yoga” very loosely. For about 2 minutes after I meditate, I do some back stretches, down-dog, up-dog, warrior poses and boom…done! It gets blood flowing to the joints and seems to make me less sore from the previous day’s workout.

Chug 20oz of ice water - having ice water first thing in the morning (before anything else) has been shown to kick start your metabolism, improve your gut health, and gets you hydrated right off the bat. I keep a glass bed-side so I can rollover and chug.

Make coffee - done with NO phone or music. Everyone should have at least 5 minutes of alone time a day. Like completely alone, with no distractions. This is where I’ll think about things I need to get done during the day.
